Four Over-looked Essentials
Virtually every business has integrated some level of computerization and modern communication, but I continue to be amazed at the number of professionals who don't use these four basics:
1. A Shredder. These are widely available and essential! Not only do professionals routinely handle confidential paperwork that should NEVER be thrown in the trash, but identity theft is increasingly common. If you only use it to shred your credit card statements, it is a great investment and good insurance. Buy one for the office, and one for your home.
2. A Telephone Headset. They save 'cricks' in the neck, improve sound quality, and leave your hands free. But, get a GOOD one! Nothing is more frustrating (and unprofessional) than a headset that garbles your voice. Probably the biggest source is HelloDirect.com, although I've purchased several sets from Midwest Teletron at (800) 827-9715 and been extremely pleased.
3. Pocket Tape Recorder. I got frustrated losing great ideas because I didn't write them down. Now, I carry a miniature recorder and use it to record quick reminders. One warning: do NOT use it for 'dictation' - you'll never listen to those long, elegant notes. A short phrase or a sentence is more than enough to remind you at the end of the day. Wonderful tool!
4. Old-fashioned Typewriter. I bought one for less than $100 and use it to type quick notes here in the office, address envelopes, write checks, and take phone messages. Even bad typing is faster and more legible than my handwriting. A good typewriter can dramatically improve your daily productivity.
Invest in great tools. Your productivity, and ultimately your success, depend on it. Give yourself a chance to do your best work!
